Cynthia joined the FitStart classes last spring and from the moment she stepped through the doors her smile has not faded. She is always willing to try something new, asks for help when she needs it and pushes herself when she knows she can. She encourages others, is always up to make the people around her smile and celebrates her own and others accomplishments. Not only has she smashed some goals, grown stronger and grown fond of burpees, she is an important member of the RiseAbove family. Congrats on being this month’s member of the month Cynthia and keep up the great work!
I first learned about RiseAbove from my friend Tracy in April 2018. She told me about this great gym and how she loved the variety in the workouts, the instructors were wonderful and the members were all so supportive of each other. She especially spoke of Cheri and how great she was with everyone, regardless of your fitness level. I listened but never really gave it any thought. That August, Tracy texted me and let me know that RiseAbove was having a promotion for their class FitStart and she thought I would love it. So I agreed! My official journey with RiseAbove started September 2018. Being a plus size women, I was very self-conscious and nervous to start at a new gym. I have had gym memberships before and I always felt like people were thinking why is she here, there’s no way she works out or there’s no way she knows what to do. Tracy was a great support in saying it’s different at RiseAbove, everyone is so supportive of each other and again CHERI is great. Walking into my first class, I was final going to work out with this positive, uplifting, cheerful, supportive Cheri but instead it was her husband Matt. I thought oh crap where’s Cheri but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Matt was so sweet, soft spoken, encouraging and very supportive. He kept checking if I was ok, telling me to breathe (which I wasn’t) and just to go at my own pace. After that first class I thought I was going to die and there’s no way I could do this again. But on Wednesday I went to my second class and finally worked out with Cheri and it was amazing! Just like Matt she was supportive, encouraging and checked in on me and modified to help me succeed. And just like that, after 2 class I was hooked. I finally felt liked I belonged and that RiseAbove really cared about me, not just my wallet. If I could use one word for RiseAbove and all the amazing people that work and work out there it would be GRATEFUL… I’m grateful that a gym like this exists. I’m grateful for the supportive members and new friendships. I’m grateful that I feel stronger and happier in my life. I’m especially grateful for Cheri! The love, support and encouragement you have shown me means more than I could say. You’ve help me believe more in myself and to not give up. I’m proud to say I’m 20+ pounds down, my clothes are looser and I’m continuing to get stronger after every workout. Thank you RiseAbove!
Congratulations to Nirmal … it’s been an awesome ride so far, working with Nirmal. He came to in with specific goals and he has been able to meet each one so far. He works hard every single workout, with minimal complaints, lol. Keep pushing my friend, it’s been a pleasure to celebrate your successes!
Member of the Month – Tracy Greco
Tracy began her journey with us, trying the 30 day Kick Start. She quickly became an active member in every sense of the word. Not only did she challenge herself with each workout, she encouraged others, tried new things, heckled and laughed with the rest of the RiseAbove family and always and continues to give each workout her all. Tracy has turned a trial to get motivated into a lifestyle and it definitely shows! Congrats on all your hard work Tracy!
My RiseAbove Journey:
I was tired of my clothes being too tight, tired of having no energy and the thought of being over 40 and trying to lose weight was daunting. My journey with RiseAbove started when I saw a Facebook ad for a 30 day challenge to ‘Kick Start the Summer’ in April 2018. I thought it would be a perfect fit for me, my goal was to get motivated enough to workout on my own for the rest of the summer. I was quickly welcomed into the RiseAbove family, not only by Cheri and Matt, but by all of the amazing RiseAbove members. Never once did I feel intimidated in any way, being a new class or a new exercise, everyone was always encouraging and motivating through every workout. Before I knew it, my 30 day challenge was over and I WAS HOOKED! As I started to see results and changes in by body – losing weight, gaining muscle but most of all feeling strong – it made me want MORE. I wanted to push myself to see what I can do and achieve. I didn’t know I had this in me. I love that every workout is different and new. Always challenging my body in new ways. And through it all there is laughter and fun. It never feels like a chore to work out at RiseAbove. I look forward to going every single time. Its amazing to be part of the RiseAbove fit family where you get to cheer and support others that are achieving their goals and milestones.
Member of the Month – January 2019 – Zainab Virjee
I began my journey with RiseAbove Fitness Studio in June of 2018. I had the fortunate opportunity to meet Laura Nicoll, at work one day where she shared her passion for fitness and health! I was able to learn more about the studio, and decided to give this place a shot. I never felt comfortable at other gyms because I never really knew what was good for my body, so I thought what would I have to loose to give this a try. My mother and I began personal training sessions with Laura in the summer, and I could feel the change instantaneously. Laura personalized the exercises and made sure my mom and I were able to feel good and begin to achieve our goals. I always left the sessions feeling great, and on top of it all made a new friend. I couldn’t help but wanting to do more for myself, as of August I began attending classes twice a week additional to the personal training sessions, I felt slightly intimidated, as I was very new to the environment. However after attending a few classes, I honestly felt like I was apart of the Rise Above family. I never felt judged or less than anyone else because I wasn’t able to do something, but rather was encouraged to try my best, work through the pain and just keep moving. Once my weekly personally training sessions came to an end, I decided to attend classes between five to six times a week. This active lifestyle has become a part of my routine, I look forward to attending the classes every day, not only for the exercises for itself but being able to be in such a positive environment full of amazing individuals. Cheri, Matt and Laura are so adaptable and only want what is best for ones overall health. Cheri and Laura are amazing trainers who have a heart of gold, and I am truly blessed to be able to call them my good friends. I can truly say I have met so many amazing ladies at this studio who continue to support me in my journey and help me push myself to be my best self. I am a part of a new community that I never imagined was possible, no matter where I started; I am working towards loving this new me. This journey has not only changed my physical body, but has influenced my mental and emotional state. Through this tough year, being able to be a part of the RiseAbove Fitness Studio has helped me be a happier and healthier woman. I am excited to see where 2019 will bring me and hoping I will continue to have the opportunity to become a stronger, healthier person.

Meet Mary… she has been training with me for almost 6 months… her dedication and determination has seen her get some positive results and is always a pleasure to work with and is always willing to push through the pain. Our ideal client!!
And here is her story…..
As a mom of two, I have always been physically active and have joined many gyms/training programs in order to lose weight and become more toned. Despite this, I have never felt as though I noticed a change in my body.
After hearing about RiseAbove Fitness through my daughter who was interested in receiving personal training, I decided to join as well. Since joining in July 2018, my daughter and I trained with Matt two times per week. As someone who already worked out on my own, I did not really have any interest in joining a gym/program because I thought that the exercise I did were good enough (little did I know how wrong I was). As my daughter convinced me to sign up and train with her for the summer, I initially planned on stopping once she left back for school. However, it is now almost December and I still continue to train with Matt.
From only 5 months of training I have never felt better and stronger, both physically and mentally. Matt is an amazing trainer that radiates positive energy and really motivates you to keep going. I love that each workout is designed differently so that I am never tired of doing the same thing. The facility is always clean and organized, and it’s evident that Matt and Cheri both put a lot of care and dedication into their business in order to transform other people’s lives. From the progress that I noticed from training in the summer, I knew that there was no chance that i would not continue with it ! I have noticed such a huge difference and I am so happy with the outcome so far. I have never experienced trainers who were so invested in their clients and accommodating of their schedules. It’s true that Matt and Cheri make you feel as though you are family and I cannot thank them enough for everything.
I will continue on this journey and look forward to reaching my fitness goals!!
Member(s) of the Month – September
The Gnida Girls – Antonella, Alana, & Taylor
This month we’re doing things a little different under the member of the month category, instead of just one we’ve decided to feature three of our members who happen to be a mother and her two daughters. Their dedication, drive and humour through their workouts is amazing. We love the Gnida girls and here is their story…
WE started working out with Cheri in January of 2017. We collectively decided to start working out together as we felt that we would push each other even though we are at different fitness levels. Cheri does small group personal training sessions with us.
Antonella: I decided to work out with my daughters as I wanted to set an example to them and when I started I was not at a fitness level that was close to my daughters. Today I am stronger and am able to do exercises that I never thought I would be able to do.
Taylor: I did not have a good relationship with working out due to a lack of motivation, but committing to going twice a week allowed me to begin to look forward to going as I saw results week after week. Although I had a soccer background, I have gained a lot of strength and am happy with the way I feel now.
Alana: I have played competitive soccer for many years but working out in a gym was never something that I liked to do. I started working out with Matt and Cheri with my soccer team and began to enjoy working out thanks to them. After all of this time working out with them I am happy with my results and thankful for all they have done
