Kim began her fitness journey with Cheri working after school in the small music room at school. She had her fears and was unsure of what this new adventure entailed. She soon proved to be up for a challenge and wanting more. She started with RiseAbove in May doing the after school class and now participates in a range of classes. She is a committed, involved and a peppy member of the RiseAbove family that doesn’t hesitate to tell you her favourite and not so favourite exercises but is always pushing herself to try new things, push a little harder than yesterday and kick ass doing it. Congrats Kim on your accomplishments, your strength and commitment to health.
My Journey- By Kim
Tired. This word described every part of my life and me. I was tired of: being overweight; every part of my body hurting; getting tired out easily; having difficulty doing any kind of physical activity; having to buy clothes a size bigger; and dealing with a multitude of medical issues. I started working with a naturopath last August and she had me make some changes. Of course I changed my eating habits and added in some supplements but when she suggested, no, TOLD me that I had to exercise I believe I started crying right in her office. I was doing yoga once a week – why couldn’t that be enough?!?! I had a membership to a gym and attempted to visit there a couple times a week but I always hated it. I never knew what to do there. I went on the treadmill, tried the elliptical, and maybe a few of the weight machines but I hated every moment I spent there. I slowly started losing some weight because of my dietary changes but I was still so tired. The final straw was when I found out that my cholesterol level was still high despite my healthy eating. I couldn’t take it anymore and I knew that I needed to add in some serious exercise. That’s when I broke down and asked Cheri to help me. Working with her one-on-one after school soon became something that I looked forward to because she made working out interesting and dare I say, fun! Each day was a different set of exercises that challenged me both mentally and physically. Working out with Cheri soon turned into me wanting to try out her gym. I am so glad that I did because I found my place there with women that were just like me. I have hit some new milestones with my physical abilities (I’ll never forget the day I actually did real sit-ups without wanting to throw up) and my mentality towards exercise (I actually look forward to going to the gym now)! Rise Above has not only given me a new body but a new family that I actually like being around.
