First off, I want to mention that for one year I owned a gym membership to a franchise gym and went three times in the year. When I met Cheri at work last year she mentioned she owned the studio with Matt. I was seeing a dietician at the same time. I thought having Cheri at work would hold me accountable to actually use the studio, so I got my free week pass and tried it. It took me a while to figure things out for me, as I disliked working out (A LOT). I made endless excuses as to why I should not show up. As I attended more classes, I got stronger. Exercises that were difficult a year ago became achievable and enjoyable. The atmosphere is so encouraging and empowering and I always get in great laughs when I go to classes. I have started to incorporate jogging and yoga into my fitness routine. I would not have been able to do them without the foundation I have got from RiseAbove, Thanks so much Matt and Cheri and the RiseAbove family.
I’d been working out for a number of years, then took a break. After a few months my body and mind was telling me I needed to get out there and get back into shape. My husband had mentioned to me about RiseAbove. I was initially hesitant as I wasn’t a big fan of crowded gyms. I wasn’t sure what to expect.
I was so nervous heading into my first class, but Cheri and the ladies were so encouraging, helping me out and making me feel welcomed. I was thinking to myself ok, this is good, we are all in the same boat. Wasn’t feeling intimated at all. I love the classes as its always different every time. Never a dull moment, which I love!
I cannot believe I started with Rise Above in February 2018. Its gone by so fast 😊 !!!
I’ve started to see some results, feeling much stronger, more energy. Feeling great about myself. I love going to the 6AM classes, perfect way to start off your day. Not too crazy about the burpees, but working on it.
I’m very happy that I joined Rise Above family , thank you Matt and Cheri, so glad you welcomed me with open arms.
My life changed the minute I walked into RiseAbove on December 4, 2018. A mutual friend was tired of listening to me complain about me weight. She recommended I go see Cheri and Matt at RiseAbove Fitness.Best Advice Ever! I now try to work out 4 times a week. It’s not about the weight anymore! Though I have lost inches and feel so much better in my clothes…it’s about feeling happy physically and mentally…It’s finding my strengths in workouts I’ve never dreamed possible…1 minute planks…burpees are still a work in progress and spider planks are a venture in motion. The classes are fun and effective. With the help of well certified staff, I’ve exceeded my own expectations in toughness and flexibility. A very important part of RiseAbove Fitness is it’s supportive family (members). They are all encouraging, inspirational and respectful. Cheri and Matt have created an empowering and safe environment for people to grow and flourish into strong empowered bodies and minds. RiseAbove Fitness has become part of my life. I can’t imagine my journey any other way. I have become a more confident and well-rounded workout person.
It’s now time to get my son involved.
Thank you Cheri and Matt for making me part of your family, Pia.
I first heard about RiseAbove in November 2017 at the Bolton Home Hardware Ladies Night. That was also the first time I met Matt and Cheri. I stopped by their booth and they explained what RiseAbove was about and where they were located. They mentioned they were holding a draw for a free month membership so I entered my name. I didn’t think I would actually win, but was later contacted by Matt and scheduled a time to check out the studio. Soon after I signed up for my first class and that’s when my journey with RiseAbove began.
I had previously tried various classes with a friend: Survivor Bootcamp, Zumba, Hot Yoga, and Kickboxing, but they were all short term and getting our schedules to match wasn’t easy. I then started walking after work for 1-2 hours per day to ensure I was getting in some kind of activity. Over the years I started building up my own little workout area in my basement but started finding using equipment boring and becoming a challenge to stay motivated on my own. Work was also keeping me busy and without realizing it I found myself working longer hours and skipping out on my workouts. I needed to get back in shape and wanted to have more energy. I needed a change!
I will never forget day one. The elusive workout called ‘Ride the Rack”. Um sure okay, ya, I can do that, no problem! I started to doubt myself during the workout and thought this is going to be the longest hour ever, especially when the timer wasn’t beeping to say the minute was up. Really, a minute must be over by now! But Cheri was with me along the way, supporting and encouraging me, ensuring I didn’t give up. Ok, first class done, I survived! Let’s just say that was the only day I showed up that week! I couldn’t move for days (I know most of you know what I am talking about). But that didn’t stop me. I returned the following week for a few more classes and completed my free month. I liked the classes and results I was starting to see so I then signed up for 6 months, and then a year, and still going.
From the moment I walked into that door, I was greeted with smiling faces and open arms. Everyone has been so encouraging along the way and this is one place where I never feel intimidated.
As I continue my journey, I encourage those that haven’t started theirs yet to try RiseAbove, you won’t regret it. Sorry, I still can’t say “I love burpees” (they are slowly growing on me), but I love that I met Matt and Cheri, the members, the workouts, and the variety of classes. Attending classes at RiseAbove has become my new routine and has helped me feel better, become stronger, and have more energy.
This is where the magic happens and along the way gaining lasting friendships and being part of an ever growing family.
I can’t believe that a little over one year ago I decided to join RiseAbove and start exercising! Since having children 23 years ago, I truly didn’t think that I would ever want to exercise or work out again like I did in my teens and 20’s. I was completely happy filling my time with other active things (gardening, walking, hiking or going on the tread mill 3-4 times a yearJ) In fact, I was so convinced that I was never going to work out again that one day shortly after meeting Cheri, I boldly told her, “Please do not take this personally, but I won’t be joining your studio. It’s just not something I do.” I was happy and content to live out the remainder of my life just the way things were. At the time that I said this to Cheri, I had already lived three to four years with severe lower back pain and mobility issues as a result of a spinal condition called spondylolisthesis. I was struggling to move, sleep and walk without pain. Even with this, I was adamant I wasn’t working out!
However, here I am. Over one year in! It all started with a conversation with my husband. He wanted to lose some weight and gain more mobility in his back for his golf swing and I wanted my back pain to go away. Ironically that day, we decided that we should start exercising to see if this would help; to see if we could help our bodies feel better and younger again. So, we bravely walked in to the RiseAbove studio to talk to Matt and Cheri, to see if this was for us. Since that day, Matt and Cheri have been more than supportive, accommodating and completely encouraging. We started with personal training sessions catered to our skill and ability level to get us started. Over the course of only a few months, we began to feel better, stronger and more flexible. And, as I personally became stronger, my back pain left. Completely left! I w
ould even say that I no longer have a back problem. The strength, muscle and flexibility that I have acquired have begun to transform my body and my lifestyle. I am so very thankful that Cheri walked in to my life. I am so very thankful for her friendship. I am thankful she never pushed or made me feel less than or incapable. She makes me feel valued and inspired. I am grateful!
I have been a member of RiseAbove Fitness for at least 5 years now. Before I joined, I was somewhat active, I jogged 3 times a week and played the occasional pick up soccer with the ladies, but felt I needed something more. I wanted help to increase my endurance and become stronger … I wanted to look fit.
At the time, I started off working out twice a week and slowly increased to 3, 4, and now minimum 5 days a week. This has become part of my lifestyle and have no plans in stopping. Being a woman in my 40’s I think it’s extremely important that I continue to be active which has helped my confidence and in the long run, lower my risk from osteoporosis and other aging ailments. That’s my goal!
RiseAbove is a place where anyone starting at any level will feel comfortable. Everyone works at their own pace and we all support each other. Attending a class doesn’t feel like a chore, classes are enjoyable and the ladies are fun to be around. That is what it should be like.
RiseAbove is my home away from home and I am forever grateful to Cheri and Matt.
I first learned about RiseAbove from my friend Tracy in April 2018. She told me about this great gym and how she loved the variety in the workouts, the instructors were wonderful and the members were all so supportive of each other. She especially spoke of Cheri and how great she was with everyone, regardless of your fitness level. I listened but never really gave it any thought. That August, Tracy texted me and let me know that RiseAbove was having a promotion for their class FitStart and she thought I would love it. So I agreed! My official journey with RiseAbove started September 2018. Being a plus size women, I was very self-conscious and nervous to start at a new gym. I have had gym memberships before and I always felt like people were thinking why is she here, there’s no way she works out or there’s no way she knows what to do. Tracy was a great support in saying it’s different at RiseAbove, everyone is so supportive of each other and again CHERI is great. Walking into my first class, I was final going to work out with this positive, uplifting, cheerful, supportive Cheri but instead it was her husband Matt. I thought oh crap where’s Cheri but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Matt was so sweet, soft spoken, encouraging and very supportive. He kept checking if I was ok, telling me to breathe (which I wasn’t) and just to go at my own pace. After that first class I thought I was going to die and there’s no way I could do this again. But on Wednesday I went to my second class and finally worked out with Cheri and it was amazing! Just like Matt she was supportive, encouraging and checked in on me and modified to help me succeed. And just like that, after 2 class I was hooked. I finally felt liked I belonged and that RiseAbove really cared about me, not just my wallet. If I could use one word for RiseAbove and all the amazing people that work and work out there it would be GRATEFUL… I’m grateful that a gym like this exists. I’m grateful for the supportive members and new friendships. I’m grateful that I feel stronger and happier in my life. I’m especially grateful for Cheri! The love, support and encouragement you have shown me means more than I could say. You’ve help me believe more in myself and to not give up. I’m proud to say I’m 20+ pounds down, my clothes are looser and I’m continuing to get stronger after every workout. Thank you RiseAbove!
Originally my main goal when signing up for my RiseAbove membership was to lose weight and to tone my body. I felt these were important in order to maintain good health and to feel good. I had these goals for many years and had tried jogging and playing soccer as a means to meet them. Although it kept me active and I enjoyed them, I was still not meeting her goals and was finding I felt unmotivated and lacked the time to put forth a solid effort.
I had been feeling down and realized that I didn’t want to do this on my own anymore. I was ready to find an outlet that would help me succeed and I was driven to start making changes. That was about 4 years ago when I decided to take a class with Cheri.
The first few classes were tough and even though I felt as though I was somewhat fit, I found the challenge of a class to be a different caliber of challenging. This once or twice a week class start has now turned into a 4 to 5 times a week. The initial challenge of new exercises, techniques, different formats and yes, even cardio components, is now what I strive on to push and challenge myself.
Since working out I have been able to meet my original goals and I continue to set new goals. I feel stronger and fit. I find that by being part of small group I am more motivated and feel like part of a team. Even though I have hit small bumps in the road along the way I realize that exercise is an outlet, a way of life and lifestyle. I strongly believe that it’s not a short-term goal or something you do to reach a goal and then stop. It’s an ongoing priority to look after ME!
I have been brave enough to say that my fitness routine has helped with my anxiety and stress and that the support I receive from the trainers and the people in my classes have made me feel comfortable, I have fun and I feel like I am part of a family.
My hectic work and family schedule had left me unable to have a consistent schedule to commit to my workout regimen. I would regularly put in 10,000 steps a day at work and although I was physically active it just wasn’t enough.
It was a friend of mine that started talking about the studio she had been going to (RiseAbove). She talked about the small group setting and the fun group of ladies that she worked out with. That’s when I decided to give it a try.
When I first enrolled my main goal was to look and feel better about myself. I knew that attending on a regular basis was going to be the hardest part but after starting I knew that I had to make some changes. I asked for a schedule change at work and realized that I would have to put in the work to get to my goal.
At times work and life in general have caused gaps and up and downs in my training but my friend, the people I have met in my classes and the trainer have made me want to come and workout and be apart of a great support system.
My word of advice to anyone looking for a supportive and fun place to get active; “Just do it! Be the boss of you!”. RiseAbove is a safe place to be you and look after your inner body and mind health.
I honestly DO, look forward to my work outs.
What I failed to mention, is the little pangs of jealousy, I get, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. I’m at work, and there’s a class going on, without me.
Saturday’s suck too!!
You and Cheri are 2 very special people.
It shows, in the way you are, together, and how you are with all the members.
I picked up on that, right away. It’s another reason I like being there. It’s what makes burpees worth doing. (Ya, that’s a big fat lie).
See ya Wednesday.
I have always been active and health conscious. I was a gymnast in high school and university, played baseball and always belonged to a gym. As I got older and life got busy I found it harder to get to the gym and I thought that I could do my workouts at home. My commitment soon fizzled and I wasn’t enjoying the workouts as much. I wanted to feel better about myself and I wanted to enjoy getting fit and working out. I decided to try a class with my neighbor that was teaching classes at a small studio.
With no expectations I began seeing that working out in a small group was motivating, enjoyable and fun. I soon realized that I loved the camaraderie of working out with the ladies, the support of the ladies and the trainers, Matt and Cheri. Their motivation and dedication to their members has definitely been a big part why I am consistent with my workouts.
My word of advice; “Try RiseAbove! You will love it!”
My journey started in Feb 2017. I felt like I had it all, great family and kids, a career, beautiful home but felt it wasn’t enough. I had to do something…. for myself. I finally had the courage to meet with Matt. I left the studio unsure this would be the right fit for me…. I enrolled anyway. I came to my first BodyWerkz class with Cheri and did a mental “sign of the cross” before the class began. When I left I was convinced I wasn’t coming back… it was hard!! What did I get myself into?? Even though I was intimidated I didn’t want to be defeated, I attended a weekly class and it felt good. I knew I wasn’t as good as the others but 7 months later, with Cheri’s motivation, I can hold my own. This has taught me when to push myself and how far I can go. it has built my confidence; I feel more outgoing and have an overall happiness that makes me a better person. Matt & Cheri made me feel like part of the RiseAbove family from day 1, and love the ladies that participate in my class. Always remember the hardest part is showing up…. this is my story.
I’m not usually one for selfies, but I’ve been inspired to share my fitness journey. I have always been small, but never very strong. I have always been self-conscious about certain parts of my body. Since the beginning of the summer I have really committed to regular workouts and taking time out to make myself better each day. For the first time in a long time I feel strong and confident. This is truly the happiest and healthiest I have ever been. A huge shoutout to my beautiful friend Cheri @ckmtemp and her amazing husband Matt @mtemp27 at RiseAbove Fitness for creating a place to workout that is motivating, fun, and filled with amazing people. Looking forward to continuing working toward my fitness goals this year with the best group of people around.
My trainer Matt is an unbelievable guy. He’s very patient when training you and allows you to focus in on the workouts. He’s by your side all the time, but again doesn’t overwhelm you. Matt is non-judgmental and encourages me to be myself and do what I need to do in order to add to a successful workout. Every session Matt changes up the workouts and ensures that I am being challenged. I came to Matt with a personal goal, and areas of my body that I need to improve on (losing weight in certain areas and gaining muscle in certain areas). Matt schedules and incorporates exercises that will help me reach my goal. He’s extremely detailed and when I walk in to the studio, he always has on a board what we’ll be doing for the session (true dedication to clients). Matt is also very knowledgeable about fitness and muscle groups and consistently ensures what muscle groups are being targeted during a workout. Nothing beats a great atmosphere and a great trainer.
Like Matt always says: “When you feel like quitting, think about why you started.”
I have been going to RiseAbove Studio since September 2014. I truly recommend anyone to come and join and work out with Cheri or Matt. I love attending the BodyWerkz classes. I have seen great results and most of all, we all have a great time and share some laughs. The studio has a great comfortable atmosphere and is not intimidating to newcomers.
Cheri you’re an inspiration. Thank you for helping me get motivated!!

To be able to attend a gym where you can work out in a non intimidating environment is RiseAbove. A place where you can not only attend BodyWerkz classes but Yoga and Zumba all at one convenient location is RiseAbove. To be pushed to your limit by the most inspiring and professional trainer I know is Rise Above. Thank you Cheri & Matt for creating this facility. You have motivated me from day one. I have been part of this team for almost a year. I am stronger. I am more confident and I feel fantastic.

Hi Matt, I can’t believe I came to Rise Above gym 1 1/2 yrs ago, I started with a friend and enjoyed the workouts so much I continued to come all throughout the year by myself and have even worked my way up to doing burpees lol. I truly believe I am a stronger person over this past 1 1/2 yrs and have met some really great ladies who are not judgmental but rather encourage one another to better themselves. Please renew my membership for another year and i look forward to many more great workouts at Rise Above.
All is well and thank you for creating an environment where I can come and workout with genuine people. Thanks to you and Cheri for all your hard work and support in making this “new me” achievable. I have never felt this strong and empowered and it’s all because of Rise Above. 🙂
Please renew my contract for the year.
“My journey with Matt & Cheri at RiseAbove Fitness began 2 1/2 years ago. I joined their Zumba class thinking it would hep me lose a couple of pounds, then I was asked to join in the fitness classes. As I had gotten to know some of the women at the gym, I felt comfortable enough to give it a try. I was a little hesitant at first as I had previous back surgery and wasn’t sure what my physical limitations were. I soon discovered that my workouts were strengthening my back and core. I started to look forward to my workouts despite some physical limitations. Cheri has always worked with me and encouraged me to workout at a level that is comfortable for me. I have met some amazing and fun ladies along the way. I also love the fact that every workout is different. Matt & cheri have taught me more nutritional values that I have incorporated into my daily diet. I feel that my body has never been in better shape than I am right now, I am so thankful that I met Matt and Cheri at RiseAbove Fitness and that I am part of the #Riseabovefitfam“
My Journey- By Kim
Tired. This word described every part of my life and me. I was tired of: being overweight; every part of my body hurting; getting tired out easily; having difficulty doing any kind of physical activity; having to buy clothes a size bigger; and dealing with a multitude of medical issues. I started working with a naturopath last August and she had me make some changes. Of course I changed my eating habits and added in some supplements but when she suggested, no, TOLD me that I had to exercise I believe I started crying right in her office. I was doing yoga once a week – why couldn’t that be enough?!?! I had a membership to a gym and attempted to visit there a couple times a week but I always hated it. I never knew what to do there. I went on the treadmill, tried the elliptical, and maybe a few of the weight machines but I hated every moment I spent there. I slowly started losing some weight because of my dietary changes but I was still so tired. The final straw was when I found out that my cholesterol level was still high despite my healthy eating. I couldn’t take it anymore and I knew that I needed to add in some serious exercise. That’s when I broke down and asked Cheri to help me. Working with her one-on-one after school soon became something that I looked forward to because she made working out interesting and dare I say, fun! Each day was a different set of exercises that challenged me both mentally and physically. Working out with Cheri soon turned into me wanting to try out her gym. I am so glad that I did because I found my place there with women that were just like me. I have hit some new milestones with my physical abilities (I’ll never forget the day I actually did real sit-ups without wanting to throw up) and my mentality towards exercise (I actually look forward to going to the gym now)! Rise Above has not only given me a new body but a new family that I actually like being around.
We started working out with Cheri in January of 2017. We collectively decided to start working out together as we felt that we would push each other even though we are at different fitness levels. Cheri does small group personal training sessions with us.
Antonella: I decided to work out with my daughters as I wanted to set an example to them and when I started I was not at a fitness level that was close to my daughters. Today I am stronger and am able to do exercises that I never thought I would be able to do.
Taylor: I did not have a good relationship with working out due to a lack of motivation, but committing to going twice a week allowed me to begin to look forward to going as I saw results week after week. Although I had a soccer background, I have gained a lot of strength and am happy with the way I feel now.
Alana: I have played competitive soccer for many years but working out in a gym was never something that I liked to do. I started working out with Matt and Cheri with my soccer team and began to enjoy working out thanks to them. After all of this time working out with them I am happy with my results and thankful for all they have done
After hearing about RiseAbove Fitness through my daughter who was interested in receiving personal training, I decided to join as well. Since joining in July 2018, my daughter and I trained with Matt two times per week. As someone who already worked out on my own, I did not really have any interest in joining a gym/program because I thought that the exercise I did were good enough (little did I know how wrong I was). As my daughter convinced me to sign up and train with her for the summer, I initially planned on stopping once she left back for school. However, it is now almost December and I still continue to train with Matt.
From only 5 months of training I have never felt better and stronger, both physically and mentally. Matt is an amazing trainer that radiates positive energy and really motivates you to keep going. I love that each workout is designed differently so that I am never tired of doing the same thing. The facility is always clean and organized, and it’s evident that Matt and Cheri both put a lot of care and dedication into their business in order to transform other people’s lives. From the progress that I noticed from training in the summer, I knew that there was no chance that i would not continue with it ! I have noticed such a huge difference and I am so happy with the outcome so far. I have never experienced trainers who were so invested in their clients and accommodating of their schedules. It’s true that Matt and Cheri make you feel as though you are family and I cannot thank them enough for everything. I will continue on this journey and look forward to reaching my fitness goals!!
I began my journey with RiseAbove Fitness Studio in June of 2018. I had the fortunate opportunity to meet Laura Nicoll, at work one day where she shared her passion for fitness and health! I was able to learn more about the studio, and decided to give this place a shot. I never felt comfortable at other gyms because I never really knew what was good for my body, so I thought what would I have to loose to give this a try. My mother and I began personal training sessions with Laura in the summer, and I could feel the change instantaneously. Laura personalized the exercises and made sure my mom and I were able to feel good and begin to achieve our goals. I always left the sessions feeling great, and on top of it all made a new friend. I couldn’t help but wanting to do more for myself, as of August I began attending classes twice a week additional to the personal training sessions, I felt slightly intimidated, as I was very new to the environment. However after attending a few classes, I honestly felt like I was apart of the Rise Above family. I never felt judged or less than anyone else because I wasn’t able to do something, but rather was encouraged to try my best, work through the pain and just keep moving. Once my weekly personally training sessions came to an end, I decided to attend classes between five to six times a week. This active lifestyle has become a part of my routine, I look forward to attending the classes every day, not only for the exercises for itself but being able to be in such a positive environment full of amazing individuals. Cheri, Matt and Laura are so adaptable and only want what is best for ones overall health. Cheri and Laura are amazing trainers who have a heart of gold, and I am truly blessed to be able to call them my good friends. I can truly say I have met so many amazing ladies at this studio who continue to support me in my journey and help me push myself to be my best self. I am a part of a new community that I never imagined was possible, no matter where I started; I am working towards loving this new me. This journey has not only changed my physical body, but has influenced my mental and emotional state. Through this tough year, being able to be a part of the RiseAbove Fitness Studio has helped me be a happier and healthier woman. I am excited to see where 2019 will bring me and hoping I will continue to have the opportunity to become a stronger, healthier person.
I was tired of my clothes being too tight, tired of having no energy and the thought of being over 40 and trying to lose weight was daunting. My journey with RiseAbove started when I saw a Facebook ad for a 30 day challenge to ‘Kick Start the Summer’ in April 2018. I thought it would be a perfect fit for me, my goal was to get motivated enough to workout on my own for the rest of the summer. I was quickly welcomed into the RiseAbove family, not only by Cheri and Matt, but by all of the amazing RiseAbove members. Never once did I feel intimidated in any way, being a new class or a new exercise, everyone was always encouraging and motivating through every workout. Before I knew it, my 30 day challenge was over and I WAS HOOKED! As I started to see results and changes in by body – losing weight, gaining muscle but most of all feeling strong – it made me want MORE. I wanted to push myself to see what I can do and achieve. I didn’t know I had this in me. I love that every workout is different and new. Always challenging my body in new ways. And through it all there is laughter and fun. It never feels like a chore to work out at RiseAbove. I look forward to going every single time. Its amazing to be part of the RiseAbove fit family where you get to cheer and support others that are achieving their goals and milestones.
